John Merlo

John Merlo offers clients a rare and powerful advantage: the perspective of a seasoned construction law specialist who first built a career from the ground up within the industry itself. His journey began not in a law library, but on construction sites in the civil sector, where he ultimately managed a major subcontracting business with projects across Southeast Queensland and Victoria.

This firsthand experience with the commercial realities and operational challenges of the industry provided the foundation for his transition into law in 1998. Culminating in a Master of Laws with a specialisation in construction law, his legal practice is built upon a practical understanding that pure legal theory cannot replicate.

This dual expertise has earned international recognition and underpins a comprehensive advisory practice. John provides strategic guidance on the full project lifecycle, from initial structuring and risk management to contract drafting, administration, and review. When conflicts arise, he is an adept strategist in dispute resolution and, if necessary, litigation. His counsel also extends to critical areas of compliance and risk, including insurance, industrial relations, environmental, and workplace health and safety law.
